Project Status RAG Report Generator

Set scope, schedule, budget and quality to red, amber or green, add one short note against each, and the generator returns a single plain-English paragraph you can copy into an email, a chat message or a status pack. The overall status takes the worst of the four. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is saved.

What the generator writes

One paragraph, in the order scope, schedule, budget, quality, with an overall status at the front and a closing line naming whatever is not green. The overall status is the worst of the four: one red makes the paragraph red, one amber makes it amber. That rule is deliberately blunt, because the alternative — averaging four colours into a comfortable amber — is how a report stops being read.

The notes are yours. The tool cleans up spacing and trailing punctuation and drops them into the sentence. It does not invent a reason, soften a red or suggest what to write. If the schedule note says the date moved, the paragraph says the date moved.

Why a paragraph at all

Most status reports already have a RAG dashboard. What they often lack is prose that survives being pasted into an email, a chat message or the first slide of a pack — something a sponsor can read in fifteen seconds without decoding a colour key. Four colours and four short notes is enough to build that. Longer than a paragraph and it becomes a second report to maintain.

Two habits make the output worth reading. Write the note as a fact rather than a feeling: "UAT start slipped four days, end date unchanged" tells a reader more than "some pressure on the plan". And keep the same four dimensions week to week, so the change between reports is visible. What belongs around the paragraph — milestones, decisions required, financials — is set out in what should be in a project status report.

From paragraph to pack

The paragraph is the executive summary line. Underneath it a weekly report normally carries milestone dates, budget against forecast, RAID movement and the decisions being asked for. A weekly status report in Excel keeps that on one page; the status report deck is the same content for an audience that reads slides. When the audience is a board rather than a delivery lead, the emphasis shifts to decisions and exceptions, which is the subject of the steering committee report guide.

Privacy

The paragraph is assembled in the browser. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and the copy button only writes to your own clipboard. Keep confidential detail out of the notes anyway — status summaries get forwarded.

Questions

How is the overall status decided?

It takes the worst of the four dimensions: any red makes the summary red, any amber makes it amber, and all four green makes it green. Averaging colours is what produces permanently amber reports.

Can I change the four dimensions?

Not in the tool. Scope, schedule, budget and quality are the four that most reporting standards use. If your organisation reports on benefits or resources as well, add those sentences after pasting.

Why only one short note per area?

A status paragraph is read in seconds. One fact per dimension keeps it readable; the detail belongs in the report or the RAID log the paragraph sits above.

Does the copy button work everywhere?

It uses the clipboard API where available and falls back to the older copy command. If a browser blocks both, the text is selected in the box so you can copy it with the keyboard.

Is any of this stored?

No. There is no storage and no network call, so closing the tab clears everything you typed.
